Davana essential oil has a strong fruity aroma, warm and sweet with woody undertones, with a hint of vanilla. It is thought to be soothing on the skin, and mentally stabilising. It is distilled from the leaves and flower tops of a small plant belonging to the same family as daisies, and is native to India, where the fragrant Davana flowers are offered daily on shrines to Shiva. Its main constituents are davanone and linalool, and it is known for its analgesic, anti-viral, mucolytic and healing qualities.
This is an essential oil that smells really good, and is often used in the making of high-end perfumes. It’s also great for a fresh complexion, fighting bacteria that cause spots and blemishes, and stimulating healing to give you glowing skin.
Traditionally used in connection with menstrual issues, due to its ability to calm muscle spasms such as abdominal cramps, Davana is thought to also help ease issues experienced during menopause and for those suffering with PMT, because of its balancing properties. Davana is also recommended as a remedy to ease colds, as it aids the drainage of mucus from the chest and sinuses.
Want to keep the other kind of bugs away? Diffuse Davana or use it in an oil burner, and it helps to repel insects. And if you do get bitten…just dab some Davana (diluted in a suitable carrier oil) onto the affected area. It’s also great for relieving minor scrapes and scratches.
However, it really comes into its own when used to relieve anxiety and stress, and is thought to be exceptionally effective at calming the mind, and bringing a sense of balance emotionally. A dab of Davana, or a blend including this wonderful oil, on your pulse points, will help you cope with daily stress, and is particularly recommended for anyone taking exams or going for an important interview.
Due to its calming effect on the mind, Davana or a mixed blend containing this essential oil, is perfect to use during meditation – just dab some on your pulse points, or use in a diffuser and let its fragrance waft you into a serene state of mind.
N.B. Davana should not be used when pregnant, and is not suitable for use with children.
Since aromatherapy is a complementary therapy, if you have any concerns about your health or are already taking any medication, it’s always advisable to consult your doctor.
