Homemade wax melts are a great way to create your own fragrant, personalized scents with easy-to-use wax and essential oils. With a few simple steps and the right materials, you can make your own unique wax melts at home for months of enjoyment.
Gather all the materials
To get started, you’ll need to gather all the necessary materials. You’ll need wax such as soy wax or beeswax, essential or fragrance oils that blend together well, moulds, and a double boiler. If you don’t have a double boiler, simply use a bowl inside of a pot partially filled with water. In our kits we also talk about melting wax in a microwave but be careful.
Prepare your workspace and safety equipment.
Before you begin making wax melts, make sure you prepare a workspace with all the safety materials needed such as oven mitts, eye protection, and a fire extinguisher. Non-flammable surfaces like countertops or cutting boards are preferred because they will stay cool throughout the entire process. Make sure your workspace is well ventilated so you don’t encounter any toxic fumes during the melting process.
Melt the wax base and add scents, colours, or dyes.
Begin by melting your wax base in a double boiler setup. Once the wax base is completely melted, you can add either scented oils, colors, or dyes to create your custom wax melt. Make sure not to overload it with too much scent as that will not only overpower the smell but it could also make the wax melts less effective. You can easily adjust the scent level by adding more oil to strong or reducing it if necessary.
Pour the melted wax into a mould of your choice
After you have melted the wax and added in your desired scent, color, or dye, it’s time to pour the mixture into a molds of your choice. Or, if you prefer a more custom look, you could pour it onto parchment paper and cut it into arbitrary shapes once the wax has cooled down. For best results, make sure that the mold you are using is heat resistant and has been treated with either vegetable oil or petroleum jelly before pouring in the wax. That way the wax won’t stick to the sides when hardened.
Allow wax to cool and harden before removing from mold.
Once you’ve poured the wax into your mold, it’s important to give it time to cool and harden completely before attempting to remove it. Doing this too early may damage the shape of your wax melts or cause them to break apart once taken out of the mold. To ensure that your wax melts keep their desired shapes, allow them to sit undisturbed in a cool place for several hours until they are completely solidified.
